One of the few programs in the world that formally combines rhetoric/composition and linguistics (broadly defined), the Ph.D. Program in Rhetoric/Composition and Linguistics at Arizona State University is uniquely positioned to prepare second language writing researchers who are well versed in both composition studies and second language studies.

The English Department offers a wide range of courses in rhetoric, composition, linguistics, applied linguistics, and TESOL. Students are also encouraged to take courses in other departments.

Arizona State University is home of several well-established second language writing specialists, including Carol Edelsky, Sarah Hudelson and Paul Kei Matsuda.

Core faculty members for the Rhetoric/Composition and Linguistics Program include: Karen Adams, Dawn Bates, Philip Bernick, Sharon Crowley, Maureen Daly Goggin, Peter Goggin, Elly van Gelderen, Mark James, Paul Kei Matsuda, Roy Major, Keith Miller, Don Nilsen, John Ramage, Duane Roen, and Patricia Webb.
